5 things to never skimp onYesterday I talked about five things you should never skimp on, including healthy food, an education, pet food, coffee and wine. Yes, you find super cheap options in each of those categories, but there are some things where the cheaper version is never as quite as good as the costlier option. In other words, these are things that you simply shouldn’t cut corners on no matter how tempting.

Today I’ll share five more things that you should dig a little deeper in your pocket to pay for. Be sure to check back tomorrow for XX items it’s okay to cut corners on.

Toilet Paper – Ever use scratchy paper that falls apart as soon as you rip it off the roll? For a few bucks more, you can get some soft two-ply paper, and avoid unnecessary chaffing. Need I really say more about this one?

Haircuts – If you’ve ever sat in the salon with tears welling up in your eyes, you know how horribly wrong “just a trim” can go. Splurge a little to look and feel your best and, unless you have a really steady hand, don’t do it yourself. (Actually, even if you do have a steady hand, you probably shouldn’t cut your own hair.)

Car maintenance and Car Insurance – Unless you live in a big city, you can’t get to work without a car. And without a job, you can’t pay your bills. So be sure to have your car maintained properly – don’t skip oil changes or buy the cheapest tires allowed by law – and make sure your insurance covers all your bases in the event of an accident (including coverage if the other driver doesn’t have insurance). Like health insurance, car insurance is one of those things you can only appreciate if you have to use it.

401(k)/IRA contributions – One day you will want to retire. To do that, you’ll need a nice little nest egg to pad any benefits you might receive. Start saving now. You’ll hardly miss the little bit out of your paycheck and most contributions can be taken out before taxes! Here’s a tip: If you get a raise at work, put that extra money (or most of it) into your retirement fund each month.
